Background

The scale and urgency of the climate crisis requires strategic thinking, coordination and collaboration at all levels – CCPAN was created to address this need amongst philanthropists.  The idea of CCPAN evolved from the desire of climate change funders to come together in order to learn from one another and stimulate effective giving in this space.

The CCPAN initiative was launched at the Iceland Climate Change Action Summit in October 2006.  The purpose of the summit was to bring together international philanthropists and foundations along with climate change experts and other actors to explore a variety of climate change mitigation initiatives in an informal, action-oriented setting.  Finding this first opportunity for informal engagement and interaction extremely valuable, the conveners committed to develop CCPAN into an on-going peer network where philanthropists could continue to share best practices and coordinate strategies and plans of action around climate change.

The second meeting of CCPAN was convened in London on July 8th 2007 attracting additional foundations and philanthropists to learn about each others strategies to combat climate change and explore how to best work together. Over the next year CCPAN will continue to convene regularly as well as developing sub groups to cultivate collaboration in key themes addressing the climate change challenge.

The third meeting of CCPAN in Asia gathered over twenty new and existing members in Taiwan. The event was a unique opportunity to bring together both foundations and philanthropists who are active in the climate change space as well as those that are new to the area.  With delegates from a wide range of countries including the United Kingdom, Taiwan, India, Hong Kong, the United States, and Australia the discussion focused on how to address climate change in Asia, as well as how to forge partnerships globally.
