CCPAN convenings
The first meeting of CCPAN was held at the Iceland Climate Change Action Summit, 12-15 October 2006. The summit brought together key players from the Young Global Leaders, climate change experts, and philanthropic communities to explore a variety of possible climate change mitigation initiatives in an informal, action-oriented setting. The CCPAN session provoked interesting discussion and agreement about the need for a permanent international platform to facilitate dialogue, coordination and cooperation amongst philanthropists working to solve the climate crisis.
The second CCPAN meeting was held in London on July 8th 2007 attracting additional foundations and philanthropists to explore strategic frameworks for structuring climate change philanthropy. The meeting also provided the opportunity for participants to learn more about each others projects and discuss ways to collaborate and coordinate their work.
At CCPAN’s core is the desire to remain a global network, so the third convening took place on September 15th in Taipei, Taiwan. The meeting in Taiwan provided a unique opportunity to bring together foundations and philanthropists from across the world who are active in the climate change space as well as those that are new to the field. Delegates from the United Kingdon, Taiwan, India, Hong Kong, the United States and Australia discussed how to address climate change in Asia as well as how to forge international partnerships.
On 7th - 8th April 2008 in San Francsico, CCPAN held its first US-based meeting. The sysposium, Philanthropy's Role in the Climate Crisis: Transforming Interest into Impact, which was hosted in partnership with Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors brought together over 150 donors, many who actively fund climate change initiatives as well as those who are new to, or considering funding in the area. Both in focus groups and plenary sessions, attendees focused on a broad range of grant-making and social investment strategies aimed at maximising impact and addressing the environmental and social challenges that donors and their constituents are facing. Convening highlights include a presentation on the new science of climate change by Dr James Hansen, head of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and and a talk by Terry Tamminen of Seventh Generation Advisors and the New America Foundation who spoke about the global dependence on oil.
Subgroups
During these past meetings, CCPAN has identified and developed sub groups to cultivate collaboration in key themes addressing the climate change challenge. Several are already under development: government policy, green building, business investment, and media & awareness. If you are interested in joining any of these groups or would like to initiate a new one please contact us at ccpan@khemkafoundation.org to let us know.
Delegation to the UN's Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
A delegation comprising of representatives from philanthropic trusts and foundations from accross the world attended the UNFCCC in Bali, 9-14th December 2007. The delegation offered funders concerned about climate change and sustainable development a unique opportunity to observe negotiations around the successor to the Kyoto Protocol, to meet with key government and non-government officials involved in these debates and to deepen their relationship with other philanthropists working in relation to the same issues.
